Badakhshan: Taliban lash disabled man on rape charges

Aug 21, 2017 - 15:58

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon have lashed a young man on rape charges in the Raghistan district of northeastern Badakhshan province, local officials said on Monday.

Maulviinfo-icon Ghulamullah Syed, the district’s administrative chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the accused with disability, named Tayyeb, had illicit relations with a girl from Diga village.

“The girl got pregnant and both have confessed to their crime,” he said, adding the pair was unmarried. The man was awarded 100 lashes by the Taliban on Sunday. But he was unaware about the girl’s fate.

A provincial council member, Mahboob Rahman Talat, said: “We endorse the Shariahinfo-icon punishment of awarding 100 lashes to each accused in a rape case. But the Taliban action was based on a kangaroo court verdict…”

He said the case was still unclear and a conspiracy against the couple could not be ruled out as the man was punished in an unjust manner. The Taliban have not yet commented on the issue.
