MAHMUD RAQI (Pajhwok): The mayor for Tagab district in central Kapisa province was arrested over corruption charges on Sunday, an official said.

Mohammad AyoubYosufzai, the Kapisa police spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Mayor Abdul Shakoo rwas caught red-handed by security personnel and appellate attorney office for extorting money from martyrs’ families in exchange for land provision.

The government provides land plots to the families of the soldiers who lost their lives at the line of duty. The detained mayor used to demand bribes from the families who received the land.

He said some people had registered complaints against the mayor previously as well,and accused him ofsellingstate-owned lands.

Yousufzai added that the mayor was caught red-handed and was directly sent to prison.

A resident of Tagab district, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok that the mayor also sold the lands allotted for teachers, and added that there was no land left in the vicinity of the district centre even to establish a government department.

He also alleged that the detained mayor recently bought a house worth $150,000 in Saleem Carvan area of Kabulinfo-icon province.
