Apr 24, 2017 - 17:28

ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Land measuring 74,000 acres has been usurped by more than 100 individuals over the past few years in southwestern Nimroz province, local officials say.

Only 1,350 acres of the usurped land has recently been retaken from their illegal occupants, said Nimroz justice department head Azizullah Basir.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the 74,000 acres of land had been grabbed by 1,202 individuals in Delaram, Chakhansor, Khashrod districts and Zaranj, the provincial capital.

However, he said 1,300 acres of the land had been recovered in Chakhansor district and 50 acres in Zaranj in the recent past.

Mohammad Akbar Sharifi, agricultureinfo-icon, livestock and irrigation director, said his department had been able to recover 133 acres of land from grabbers during the past four years.

He said the land recovered had been allocated for a 400-bed hospital, a stadium and a forest farm.

An official of the Properties Authority, who wished to go unnamed, said land grabbing was ongoing in the province since 2001.

Governor Mohammad Sami warned land grabbers irrespective of their position and status of legal action.

A provincial council member, Maulviinfo-icon Gul Ahmad Ahmadi said they had repeatedly asked the government to come hard on land usurpers.

Amanullah, a civil societyinfo-icon activist in Nimroz, said green and recreational areas had been grabbed upon by powerful individuals and had constructed residential buildings on the land.

He said the government should take action to retake land dedicated to welfare schemes from their illegal grabbers.

A tribal elder, Mohammad Sarwar, also said green and recreational areas in Zaranj city were grabbed in the recent past.

“Nimroz is dry and warm province and has unfortunately no recreational area. Most of the here parks are confiscated, these areas should be recovered and transformed into recreational areas,” he said.
